the master branch has always been more or a less in a sandbox state as blizzard produces content and features faster than one can adapt to

It's not really worth it, very few things work.
For example, in the Worgen quests chain, even the first one is broken, so basically you can do nothing except walking around, commented it a few days ago.
I think for content beyond 3.3.5 your best bet is SSP, they have a 7.3.5 realease that more or less work, it's not open source tho.
Also Mangos seems to have a MoP branch but I haven't tested it yet.
