technically there's no difference, if you're using hostname across the board

since hostname will contact the dns server, and it just creates a loopback...so you'd be connecting externally even if from the same machine...the only thing that would change is when it's passed off to another port or process

so my guess is that one of your ports or services is only allowing local traffic
