I have both internal and external dns. I own my own domain. Internal dns points wow1.myname.com to the internal IP, externally dns points to the public side of my router.

you clearly have something wrong in your network setup, why would it a domain point to different ips?

the domain should point always to the external ip, and you should also connect through the external ip
