I think I read something the other day about the sniffs needing to be manually parsed in some way before they are useful? Like they aren't just plug and play... is that right?

the sniffer writes .pkt files which are the raw packets the client sends and receives (= not human readable). We require the .pkt file though.
But if you use wowpacketparser they are readable by humans
