This mechanic was only introduced later in retail, so that it is now only necessary for the player to do damage for a short time.
I have a quest where NPCs tank and they do more damage than the player, so I asked @Shauren if that is set in the core and he told me yes, it is set in the core that the player has to do at least 50% damage to the NPC to get the kill.

but if you make your script do weird things, you can expect weird behaviour (like unlimited tags)

This will grant the killer (and through them their party members) the kill credit for the kill bunny on the death of the mob, yes?
