target_compile_definitions has to work but the catch is that you can only do it after add_library is called. looking at current eluna cmangos fork it does add_definitions before that line (add_definitions has a different scoping mechanism, it works on directories and works on "future targets" added in current dir and its subdirs)

and to make it even more confusing, a cmake subdirectory isnt the same as filesystem subdirectory

in cmake something is a subdir only if you call `add_subdirectory`, not when you `include(a_cmake_script.cmake)`
