I'd question it, you kinda want to warn on load, but do you really want to prevent startup? You could more gracefully handle the data

Nothing wrong with using 3.3.5, I would actually say it's the recommended branch since it has the most playable content.
I don't think what you want is possible out of the box, but hey, you have the source code, so you can do whatever.
I wouldn't put that data in a .dbc though, first because there's no reason to ship that data in the client, second, .dbc's are not trivial to put together, and third, .dbc makes sense for data you extract from Blizzard, for your own data you can just use an SQL table

I'm aware there's nothing wrong with using 3.3.5. None of this is actually answering my question. I asked where the relevant parts of the codebase are, and some stuff about DBCs, and the server database.
