serious question, what's stopping someone who's actually knowledgeable about core development from joining the dev teams for those paid servers and then just leaking all thier stuff straight back into the open source projects? Or is that like... not in the spirit of the open source movement?

Can not take leak projects into the opensource due to gpl v2 license. Being a paid dev is one thing but if the project is released then source must be included.
