I am not on my TC computer right now, but is the behavior of this field in SpellEffets.cpp / SpellAuraEffects.cpp, or something similar in the Master branch? Or is it client side?
I found some info from a different forum, but I think they are discussing 3.3.5

the same in both branches, its meaning depends on effect and aura type, obviously its not always school mask
