So if I were to create a patch-1.mpq, would that remedy the situation or would the patch-2/3 override that entirely?

So if you make `patch-m.mpq` with a item.dbc change and a `patch-a.mpq` with a item.dbc change only the item.dbc will be loaded

The client does not collect all item.dbc files from all mpqs and matches the contents. It will just take the single newest file it finds

That's the reason why you would go for patch `patch-4.mpq` for example
