I did make some changes, including the cross faction. That could be it! I did try using a clean worldserver.conf file restored from the .dist and I got the same error. But if the issue comes from the initial execution, then that was done with the modified worldserver.conf. Do I need to try to recompile?

if you did not alter the original source code, you do not have to re-compile
