Fun fact: I started contributing by fixing stuff that was bothering me and that's how I end up doing my first contribution to must projects

I'd even argue making a WIP PR is a good way to drive some community effort and input, if you put at least some work in, there's a much greater chance that someone will help you out with what's not correct or missing backed support to do it properly

iI have also implemented many quests with SAI, as no C++ is required for this. The quest in Wintergarde, for example - if you accept the quest, a griffin flies you to the destination - didn't work for a long time. I integrated it into SAI and now it works as it should.
