What I always do is to understand how they did it, pick out an existing item and see how the whole thing is linked to the DBC and database and possibly spells.
So it was always best for me to find out how the whole thing works.

It doesn't matter which item you port. The item itself doesn't matter, only the values in the database and DBC file that are then assigned to the item.

As far as I know, the scaling value you specify in the item_template refers to the DBC
