oh well, he's using a 2 years old pserver sourcecode. so god knows what's going on there. told him he's gotta nuke mariadb and compile with mysql

You shouldn't *specify* mariadb, cmake should find mysql or compatible (mariadb) library on its own

Apart from the other things other people mentioned, installing the -dev package is not really what you want. -dev packages include the .so symlink, which is not what the linker is complaining about, it's complaining about .so.3, which is in the main library package

.so symlinks are only used for compiling, at runtime .so.x links are used
