importing pieces is always harder than just doing the whole thing (and harder than just relying on autoupdater)

It's because if I start over from ZERO, I'll lose the characters... is there any other way for this to not happen?

if you initially set up the server by following our official wiki, then all you need to do is compile new version and start it (i assume you run the server on the same system where you compiled it)
