Do you know if anything at all is tied to the 'Bang a Gong!' quest? For instance, if I set the gates to closed will the completion of that quest automatically open the gates without the full blown event? Or will it simply give the reward and complete?

That's not just a simple quest, you gotta have to code a bit if you want to emulate that event.

And afaik nothing of the whole pre aq raid stuff is scripted in TrinityCore right now

Keep in mind that TrinityCore emulates 335a and at that point, the whole aq stuff was set to done for new realms by default so it was off the table to work on that

The whole aq war effort stuff would take several hours of work for someone good at writing stuff for TrinityCore. I started working on it on a personal project but dropped it after a dozen hours of work and wasn't even scratching the surface
