i think it's changed nowadays, but it used to be the de-facto standard, and i think also the one shipped with the common windows build. It might've just been the distro default, i'm not sure

i disagree that vim serves no practical purpose anymore, but it's so out there you'd be a fool to configure any tool or distro to use it by default. Once i got comfortable with it, it's my favorite input method of any i've ever tried
