And in updating my core I'm already in-game on 5.4.8, but as I said, I'm hitting some walls that just require me to have a deeper understanding of stuff

this is a journey that's gonna take you years
Everything you see is the result of years of manual research, reverse engineering, leaks and more reverse engineering. There is no documentation about how systems are intertwined, how they 'should' behave. This really is a matter of picking one thing at a time, going in and researching it from the ground up
