One of the biggest things I am worried about is versioning... I am using quite an old version of azerothcore.. If I install the latest, will importing the old database break things?
I also don't know a whole bunch about databases, lol... So that will be a challenge too.

so yeah before trying to change servers, I'd say you should take a backup of the database and then update azerothcore

There's whoami.akama.net, which is a DNS, too. But it resolves to the auth servers IP.
