Granted I work on a Mac and Docker Desktop is shaky on a mac, but that volume went away and poof it was all gone, if it had been on the host system I could have restored. Not a huge deal I rebuilt it any did not lose a ton of time, but made changes so it is stored externally. docker compose down will wipe volumes according to their docs.

did you `docker compose down` or `docker compose down -v`?

`-v` is the one that removes volumes <https://docs.docker.com/engine/reference/commandline/compose_down/>

ah. That's weird. My server runs on Linux so I'll have a hard time speaking to the mac-specific stuff.

I'd personally say the risk of deleting the volume is negated by the ease of taking backups and I'd imagine for docker in MacOS, there's a performance hit if you put a database in a bind mount.

to be fair I don't think there's actually any documentation about how to take a backup, and there probably should be something basic written down

The volume is in essence written to the host system regardless, so it doesn't matter much
