I'm having an issue authenticating with mysql when i use heidisql, and then also when i start mysql manually. I've gone through a mysql password reset process (thanks youtube) and it pretends to work during the session when i run the reset process, but when i actually start the mysql service again, entering the same password closes mysql. any other ideas short of a reinstall?

basically worldserver, heidisql, and any other apps can't connect due to auth failures, nor can i authenticate successfully when i open mysql manually
