yeah I suppose I don't know what I want to hear either
I exported the data from heidi in *.sql (1 for each table) but that feels a little janky... I'd be more comfortable taking a direct 1:1 copy of the database files themselves but I don't know where they are under linux.

U can export whole DB into 1 file not sure if u can multiple but even if not that would be 3 files

I'm not even sure if i need to backup... if I am just updating to the latest version with the instructions on the wiki will it wipe the database? I'm guessing not

and if u made custom changes just in db and update will need u to drop world u lose that too
