or make it easy and switch to MySQL The core is built upon mysql anyways. And I have high doubts that Maria will give any noticeable performance bonuses

Yes, MariaDB has better performance but is also more lightweight, has more storage engines and supports more connections (the first two are the only relevant ones when it comes to AC, of course)

I do a lot of different things with databases so the performance is important to me but being more lightweight is always a good choice for me.

I am purely speaking from the aspect of running AC. Then I do not believe it would matter. So many more use MySQL and do not complain about any performance issues
