Player system? Did i add that note when i did that pr? I never recall ever adding notes after the charset to anything i done.

if I do wipe everything and build a new server, can I restore the backups or will they just not be compatable, and I'll need to recreate all the characters

It's possible but my guess is that some tables will require some manual adjustments

I'd keep the old DB around. Update the core and start fresh, picking from the old one where I can

It's way easier to do this for the characters than the entirety of the world db, though
