The database has no effect on the data files so there's no worry there. The core needs to be updated if the data files are and you upgrade those.

yeah i updated core first that's how i ended up here as the maps were old generating errors

That's good. Manually extracting them of course doesn't have that issue but I like the idea of just being able to download them.

I check the version mainly because I store the installed version in a XML file, that also holds all my other settings, so I know when the version has changed and it'll automatically update the files if it detects a new version.

The only downside, which is rarely stumbled upon, is that github caches it so you can't check the version and then expect it to see the new version if it was released shortly after.

I guess if you *force* an update of the client data files every time you run the command then yeah it can just grab the latest and greatest as you said.
