Would I be right in assuming if I update the maps with the new ones in the announcement I'll lose any changes I've made to my SQL database?

1) map files are nowhere related to your database.
2) You should save any and all changes you do to cour database in re-applicable sql files. Then place these files in your `Update` folder. The core will keep re-applying them to overwrite possible blizzlike updates with your custom stuff.

so any time I install a module and add SQL to the database I can put the same SQL files into the update folder and it will apply them automatically? that's cool

many modules have an auto-updater. so you wouldn't need to do that

the custom folder is meant for your own custom changes primarily.
