I do not see commit tags in github for v5.0.0. Does this mean it's safe to jump from any v4 to v5, or should I manually dig through for the first v5 commit?

No go. There are changes to acore_characters that are skipped jumping from v4.0.0 to current master. Back to applying commits month to month.

I can't help but wonder why you won't update more frequently instead of having to deal with this

But at that point I’d just drop the database and repopulate

Yes, getting back into core development. Restoring from server backups last updated 2021-01-01. Which is also allowing me to catch up on changes. Things like squashes and the worldserver db updates, instead of db_assembler.
