It really comes down to personal preference unless it's a business thing. MariaDB is still based on MySQL so the usage is basically the same.

I know mysql is long in the tooth now days. We use Snowflake at work which is like a spaceship compared to a model T

I actually switched to MariaDB years ago mainly because I wanted to switch to Galera rather than mysql cluster. It was just easier for me to manage. I'm not going back.

my home lab is fine but I'd dump it in the cloud just because I don't like the idea of running a php website on my home network.

I'd like to see a patch for the game server that if the account didn't exist it would create it automatically.
