Was the core built with mysql headers rather than mariadb? If so, it usually has issues connecting.

Might be. How do I check it? I've used this one to spin it up: https://www.azerothcore.org/wiki/install-with-docker and just added my config to connect to the DB.
I've even updated the mariadb-server ```Server version: 10.6.8-MariaDB-1 Debian buildd-unstable
```
