I haven't touched MySQL much on Windows for many, many years. I also prefer to use MariaDB.

I also don't quite understand what's so wrong with using the official installer when it takes care of all the little chores for you.

I see. Well, you could start by downloading the pre-compiled archive and running mysqld.exe (perhaps mysql.exe?) and see what it tells you.
