Did you fully removed your old/previous version of MariaDB before upgrading it ?
If on deb base linux try something like
apt-get autoremove mariadb-*
apt-get purge mariadb-*
and then you can safely upgrade it (I remember I deleted the /etc/mysql/ folder too, just to be sure, but maybe the above commands already do it)
It might help, although it might also be incomplete help I'm giving you
