What doesn't make change is that people think it's a great idea to set client files to read-only. Not just realmlist but config too.

This. It needs to be made clear. If the database value reverts then you're not actually saving the new value. If the config does, it's set to read-only. Although, it should say that you can't write to the file when you try to save it in that case.
