Github is a code repository. You were asking the 'proper' way to split off your environment. Which was a separate question from issues you were having. You don't need to use GitHub fork system if you aren't comfortable with it. But that means you either need to track changes and merging 'locally'. This could be entirely manually done or you could use a separate tool from Github.
So I was simply stating that you don't NEED the fork; if you are willing to track your changes locally. It is the preference of many to use the forks because they find the github code repository system easy/simple enough to use.
