If it is in AP mode then you have 'turned off' routing functions

Some APs still support port forwarding, it was the assumption that was the case here too. Either way, the router on the ISPs end should be sufficient for that but how you get them to forward ports who the hell knows.

Actually, my bad, I'm used to more advanced hardware that has AP on top of router functions - "normal" APs don't have that.

Wierd question, but would I be able to log into the provided router from my ISP? I only use my own router as an AP because wife was complaining about the signal

You should be able to yes. Normally the password is on the box itself as a sticker.
