so if mob x drops 1-2 linen cloth, ReferencedAmount set to 4 would make it drop... 1-8? 4-8?
while if mob y drops exactly 1 item from a set of 4, GroupAmount set to 4 would make it drop all 4 items from the set?

A reference is like a normal loot table but not assigned to a specific creature or object but creatures and objects can instead call that reference. The creature/object sets the min/max amount of items that can drop from that reference but all of them (creatures, objects, references) use groupid. It's different and frankly tough to explain.

Groups differ in the way that only 1 item will drop regardless while references can drop as many as you want. That is with the assumption that you don't change the mentioned config options
