There really aren't many steps to it, especially if you only want to play locally and not run a public realm. You just have to make sure every PC that they are going to play on has the 3.3.5/3.3.5a client and has realmlist.wtf set to the LAN IP of the server.

I was planning a wrath of the lich king, seams like a ton of stuff you can do for custom content

Well, AzerothCore only supports Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5 (12340) so if you want to play another expansion that would mean a different core. I prefer to just use a module to kind of emulate the other expansions, well vanilla and tbc - anything beyond WotLK is bothersome to try and emulate. Any core for Cataclysm and later is a broken mess anyway so that's not really an option

If you start Wow.exe and it says 3.3.5a (12340) in the bottom left you have the right one for AzerothCore. Sure, a variable is the client being clean or not but I can't say much about it.

I don't think you'd do that unless you downloaded the client from a dodgy site where it's not a guarantee that it would be a clean copy of the client
