I guess the major issue with MariaDB is no longer there, for me at least. Sure it took 5 seconds longer to boot up but at least I can tell mysql to go f itself for the time being.

That would be the dream. I guess the names of the packages aren't enough to tell them that. I don't mind mysql, it works great and all but I just don't want to run galera + mysql when I don't have to. There should, as you said, be a warning saying it's recommended to use mysql.
