It means cloning the source, running cmake and building from scratch - it is essentially like starting over. Other modules can be copied/moved so that clone part can be skipped, I suppose.

for stuff like this, the importing SQL manually to the right database, is that still relavent

I don't mind having 2 sources around though so I keep one for my custom code and one for playerbots so I don't have to do anything when swapping between them

The auto updater is the core automatically importing database files on startup. A lot of modules supports this and are picked up by it meaning you don't have to run them manually
