If I exported the table in it's current state and then drop it and add it back, would that do the same?

It's possible, it's just an auto increment id but I'm certain it would have serious side effects

Even if you export the data, the auto incremented value goes with it

It would try to insert a character with an already existing ID, causing errors and possibly crashes
