seems I did everything correctly, because I tried to apply another existing effect on my custom weapon and it works as expected

I "feel" like despite creating a new spell it is applying the same effect on the target. So even though the name is different, the effect is not. For example let's say that a warrior uses Rend. Then you copied rend and created a custom spell called "Super Rend" - but since it is a copy of "Rend" it is still just applying the "Rend" effect to the target.

So while the spell NAME is different, the EFFECT applied is the same.
