Well, mysql has a lot better performance compared to mariadb when it comes to azerothcore. It's very specific situations where mariadb would outperform mysql but pretty much none with azerothcore.

to be fair, I much prefer Galera than NDB when it comes to clustering

I just decided to add mysql on top of galera specifically for azerothcore because it just makes life a whole lot easier.
