This is my curiosity speaking but what kinds of functionality to you gain when increasing the required mySQL/MariaDB version? Is it mostly speed improvements or is there some useful thing they added?

most of the time its just internals of DB being updated there is not much features u could add to SQL DBs at this point

Well... Actually I don't even think that's the problem I'm having - I think there's some problem with linking the correct dependency library - a valid version is definitely installed because it compiles with it. But the authserver doesn't find that same version when trying to run.

It was compiled with 100522 but tries to connect using 30122. It was literally compiled with what it isn't trying to use. It's that simple.
