In the first picture you can see that mysql++ (the mysql implementation for my distro) is on version 3.3 so I'd need to use MariaDB instead of MySQL

I couldn't tell you. When I tell it to install mariadb-server, libmariadb-dev and mariadb-client it doesn't try to install these packages

Those are most likely what you need to get rid of. The mysql++ and mysql++-devel packages I don't even know what those are

Unfortunately it won't let me install libmysqlclient and libmysqlclient-devel because I already have libmariadbclient and libmariadbclient-devel - apparently there's a conflict between them of some kind.

Yes, they don't interact. That's why trying to connect to MariaDB using MySQL libraries will not work.
