I've been wanting to play for a very long time, but the $15/month sub threw me off. this seems like an excellent way to get into the game

Important to keep in mind: The retail or classic client will not suffice. You need the client from 2010, aka 3.3.5a. Classic wotlk is similar in content but not exactly the same either. If you're looking for an emulator for later expansions or for the classic client yeah don't waste your time.
