it's not well-explained, but the server is smart enough to let you connect both over internet or locally. local address / local subnet mask is what the auth server uses to decide what traffic is coming from the "local" network. so i have mine setup like this:

name: MyAwesomeServer
address: whoami.akamai.net (resolves to your public IP always)
localAddress: 192.168.0.1 (or whatever your LAN IP is)
localSubnetMask: 255.255.255.0 (all IPs 192.168.0.x are "local")

if you set your `address` to a dns name, note that the SERVER does the resolution, not the client. so split DNS doesn't work.
