I can understand that. If it *can* be done via a module I'd say there's no reason what so ever to edit the core.

If it requires a ton of changes to the core to support the module and it's not something that's going to get merged into the official repo I fail to see a reason to not just edit the core. I'm not saying that's what you're doing just kind of trying to justify my own changes.
