most ppl (not beginners) got scripts which will do things like this either fully or partially automated

I'm not sure why that's an issue. The only time you'd have to overwrite .conf with .conf.dist is if new options are added and even then you just copy the new options from the .dist to the .conf. I do use a script but the point is still very much valid.

yeah that's what I just did... I just read my log and copy pasted everything that was missing from my old *.conf

I just wondered if there was an easier way to isolate your changes so they just persist between updates

I just use a bash script that copies .dist to .conf and update the options to my liking using sed.

Yeah or if you don't want to be bothered with errors about missing config options. There's nothing wrong with automating it regardless of if you want to change the options.
