if u are running server for few friends its quite rare to get attacked but if u are running public server then its not rare at all and if u dont have proper protection u are done....many servers fell bcs they didnt have protection and were attacked first days after release and lost most of their players

You could also use packages to automatically block IPs making x number of requests in x amount of seconds. Fail2Ban is one of them.

Iptables can drop packages if hit x number of times in x numbers of seconds too but I never played around with it myself.
