At work so can't, but it should work just fine as long as dns points to external IP and you just port forward normally on your fw

That can't be true. My dev server runs on a separate machine and localAddress is 127.0.0.1 while Address is the external address and I do connect locally (obviously). If it were to always use localaddress for local systems on the same network it wouldn't work at all.
