Immediately after the command, it proceeds to list all the files. Then it creates "modes" for all the files and prompts the user to designate which file to patch.

Are you sure you are using the correct method of applying the patch? I usually apply git patch files with the `git apply ./patch-file.patch` command. Is your `patch` command an alias for this?
